South West TAFE student selected for Chilean study tour

SOUTH West TAFE student Angela Alexander is heading off to Chile after being one of only 20 TAFE students from across Victoria selected to take part in a study tour in January.

Ms Alexander is studying the Diploma of Business and Leadership and said she was so excited to be given such an amazing opportunity.

“It will give me a great chance to see what they are doing in Chile and spend time gaining ideas from others on the study tour and building valuable contacts,” she said.

Earlier this year the Victorian Government launched its new trade and investment strategy for Latin America and part of that launch included the announcement of a new outbound mobility program for Victorian TAFE students to study at Duoc UC Chile.

A group of 20 student ambassadors, accompanied by two Victorian TAFE teachers, will undertake the two-week course. Of this group 10 students will undertake a business studies program focusing on doing business in Latin America and looking at emerging markets.

The other 10 students will undertake Chilean wine and food studies.

Ms Alexander, who is employed by WRAD, said she was extremely excited to be selected for the business study tour and said it would be a great benefit for her current role where she was working on a new community project delivering peer support to youth affected by addiction issues in rural areas.

South West TAFE Business, Design and Personal Services manager Marcia McCarthy said as part of the study tour students would develop a business plan related with entrepreneurship in Chile, according to market needs, trade and institutional regulations.

Ms McCarthy said the study tour was a wonderful opportunity for one of South West TAFE’s Diploma of Leadership and Management students where they could apply the skills and knowledge of project management and leadership in an international setting.

South West TAFE CEO Mark Fidge said he was excited that students at South West TAFE were being given such amazing opportunities as part of their studies.

He said South West TAFE and the Victorian Government was continuing to make every effort to offer students extra experiences that would benefit their studies and improve their skills for the workforce.

“This will give Angela and the other students an invaluable opportunity to build relationships and enhance their studies,” he said.

The group will leave for Chile on January 11 and return on January 27.
