“My grandfather was a mechanic for Toyota for many years. He always told me not to be a mechanic, but it turned out that was where my heart lies,” he said.

Steven has almost completed his apprenticeship with Portland Mechanical Services and said he loved the rewards of taking something that was broken and being able to fix it for a grateful customer.

He said his training at South West TAFE had taught him many new skills and the teachers were extremely supportive.

“TAFE gives us the opportunity to play with and learn all about different things that we wouldn’t always see in the workshop,” he said.

Steven excelled at trade school and was pleased to win the 2023 Trade Apprentice of the Year at this year’s South West TAFE Trades Awards which was held in October.

He said that once he completed his apprenticeship he was looking to keep working in the industry and run his own business one day.
