SWTAFE’s outstanding students recognised at Pure awards

Pure Academy’s top hair, beauty, massage and nail technology students were awarded before they showed off their creative talents on the catwalk at this year’s annual event at Brother Fox at Deakin University.

SWTAFE Hair, Beauty and Massage Senior Educator Kathy Hall said the night was a fantastic opportunity to reward the students for their hard work throughout their training.

She said the training the students received at Pure Academy prepared them well for the workforce and the showcase was just one part of building their confidence and imagination as they presented their work to be scrutinised.

“It’s also a chance for them to show off their creativity and let their artistic skills shine as opposed to the commercial salon work they are used to producing,” she said.

“They’ve done an amazing job and it’s a culmination of all of their work for the year and shows the skills they’ve gained and their improvement,” she said.

Mrs Hall said the event had been running for 11 years and it was a way of showcasing the students’ work in a competitive, yet encouraging environment and honouring the top students.

SWTAFE Business, Design and Personal Services Teaching Manager Marcia McCarthy said the showcase and awards night was an occasion to recognise SWTAFE’s students and many industry partners.

She said Pure Academy had gone from strength to strength and with hundreds of students South West TAFE was the largest provider of hair and beauty training in South West Victoria.

Highlights for the year include Pure Academy named as an educator of the year finalist in the Australian Beauty Industry Awards for the second year in a row along with student success at the Hair and Beauty Industry Association Awards where Georgia McKenzie, Prue Albert and Shannon Philp all won major awards.

“Our state-of-the-art facilities, along with our industry collaboration, provide our students with the opportunity to build their skills in an industry-standard learning environment,” she said.
