Traineeship is child's play for Toby
Toby Bishop is taking on the female dominated world of child care and loving every minute of it… and so are the children.
When Toby finished year 12 in 2016 at Emmanuel College he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do, but the one thing he knew was that he wanted to be working with kids.
He said he approached Warrnambool City Council who employed him on a traineeship working across all of their Warrnambool child care centres.
“It was always something I wanted to do. I love working with kids, especially the younger age groups,” he said.
He said the children loved having a male working at the centres, especially the boys who loved to have a kick of the footy.
Toby said he had loved every minute of his traineeship and the opportunity to earn some money while he was learning valuable skills was one of the best aspects.
“I thought this was just something I was going to do on my gap year but I’ve enjoyed it so much I think I will continue to work in this industry for a while and then go and do further study,” he said.
Toby said he was looking at going to university to study primary teaching at some stage down the track.
He said he had loved his course through South West TAFE and it was great to be able to learn new skills on the job, rather than just in the classroom.
He said he had received great support from his colleagues as well as from his teacher at South West TAFE Marg Dillon.
Toby said he would recommend the course and the industry to anyone who loved working with children.
“If there are any guys who are too scared to get into this field, I would say to them to just give it a go,” he said.
