VCAL students put green thumbs to work

SOUTH West TAFE’s Foundation VCAL students have put their green thumbs to work and transformed an overgrown garden at the Archie Graham Centre.

 The courtyard garden was previously unused and through the support of the Warrnambool City Council the students have made it a peaceful place for community members to now use.

 South West TAFE VCAL teacher Rod Symons said the young students had taken charge of the project and had done a brilliant job in making an initial presentation of their ideas and then co-ordinating the entire project.

 Mr Symons said the 11 students were enthusiastic about the project and were proud of what they had achieved.

 He said the project had been great in giving the students new skills in horticulture, budgeting, ICT, planning, public speaking and liaising with community members.

 “The Archie Graham Centre wanted a nice space that could be used and that’s what these students have been able to give them,” he said.

 VCAL student Maggie Elford said it was a good project to be a part of and they learnt that things happen better when the class worked together as a team. 

The students said the most enjoyable thing was putting all the plants in and also hearing the nice comments from Archie Graham staff about the end result.
